We believe the purpose of homework is to develop an effective partnership between home and school. The tasks will consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding, particularly in literacy and numeracy; and encourage pupils, as they get older, to develop self-confidence and an ability to study on their own.
The amount of homework increases as the children progress through the school. All children are encouraged to read every night. At the beginning of each term each class’ homework schedule will be sent home.
Reading: As a school we feel that all children should continue to have their own individual books and be heard to read. The children will have a book from our reading scheme and several books from ‘choosing baskets’.
The reading scheme books will be changed after a Learning Support Assistant or teacher has been read to. ‘Choosing basket’ books can be changed as often as needed.
We use reading record books to provide a dialogue on any matter between home and school.
Fox Cubs – Every night the children are expected to read, to be read to and do other activities such as work from their phonics book to support their learning needs. In the Spring Term the children will have a ‘Big Spell’ folder with words to practice spelling.
Year 1 & 2 – A minimum of 10 minutes reading per night. Spellings to learn will be sent out on a Friday and an informal assessment will take place on the following Friday. Learning Log activities to be completed every week are given on a Friday to be returned on the following Wednesday.
Year 3 & 4 – A piece of Maths homework (MyMaths) will be set on Fridays and is to be completed by the following Wednesday. Alternate weeks: topic homework to be returned on Wednesday from the list of tasks or a task from the reading comprehension workbooks. Reading books are to be read every night. Spellings to learn are sent out weekly, tested on a Wednesday.
Year 5 & 6 – MyMaths activity and reading comprehension workbooks will be given on Fridays to be returned by the following Wednesday. Spellings will be given out on a Friday to be tested on the following Friday. A topic related project will be set for completion during half term holidays.
